On May 20th, 2012, Team Blogcastr will be taking on the second annual Gran Fondo New York. The 100 mile course will take us from the George Washington Bridge to Bear Mountain and include 8,500 feet of climbing. Training has already commenced and we are in the process of ordering some slick Blogcastr training kits. If are interested in placing an order let us know!

Startup Pong

Blogcastr is teaming up with All American Beer Pong to throw a startup party for the ages. On a date to be announced, the Boston startup community will gather to determine which startup is home to the finest athletes, i.e. the best beer pong players. Accuracy, hand-eye coordination, and endurance will all be tested in a 32 team battle. Teams are strongly encouraged to come donning startup swag and share what they are working on with the community.

Team Blogcastr is looking forward to a night of startup smack talk, gamesmanship, and good times. For updates and banter check out @StartupPong! We will keep the details rolling as they become available.

Blogcastr Now Available in App Store!

After a short three business day wait, the Blogcastr app is officially available through the app store! Among other things the app lets you create and update blogcasts, repost comments, and get real-time stats. If you don’t currently have an account you can easily sign-up from within the app. Want to check it out? Click here.

Coming soon (v. 1.1): The ability to share an entire blogcast or specific post to Facebook and Twitter.

Happy 1st Birthday!

Blogcastr was incorporated on August 9th, 2010, and thus celebrated its first birthday yesterday! The past 365 days have been full of notable experiences for us especially designing, developing, and launching Blogcastr beta earlier this year.

We were able to attend and/or demo at dozens of great startup events around Boston including RubyRiot, Mass Innovation Nights, Capitalize, Dart Dinner, BarCamp, Boston New Tech Meetup, Open Coffee, Tech Tuesday and WebInno, and met tons of great people along the way. One of the most exciting parts of this process for us has been sharing awesome experiences with our friends. Our most memorable blogcasts of the past year include Bruins vs. Canadiens, Celtics vs. Bobcats, Century Ride 2K11, Salt Lake City Airport (a.k.a. the longest layover of all time!), The Hoover Dam, The River Walk, The Vegas Strip, and Tiësto in Concert.

Although the past year has been exciting, we are even more excited about our next steps. We are currently putting the finishing touches on our native iPhone app and can’t wait to see what sorts of stuff people begin to share. More to come soon…

Over the past month, we have been cranking out code on our native iPhone app. A ton of “behind the scenes” work has been done and things are really starting to come together. Needless to say, we are pretty f#$%ing excited and we can’t wait to let the app out into the wild! Here are a few early screen shots / wireframes:

Updates from the Bunker

Since our last post we have been working hard designing and developing a native iPhone app. We are really excited about it and can’t wait to get it out the door (not there yet but stayed tuned). And if you like #winning cool stuff, we are planning an awesome contest to celebrate its release! More to come…

In February, we demoed at Mass Innovation Night and checked out Performable’s office warming party which turned out to be a great event. We also learned that live blogging is referred to as blogging en tiempo real in Spanish.

Last week we were featured in the Boston Herald (pictured above) and voting is currently open for us to be featured in Mass High Tech’s Startup Watch. Vote for us here!

In unrelated news, Kyle recently had the longest layover of his life in Salt Lake City and Matt was denied the World Series of Beer Pong crown.

Mass Innovation Nights

This coming Wednesday (2/9) Blogcastr will be be demoing at the IBM Innovation Center as part of Mass Innovation Nights. Each month, MassInno enable companies (young and old) to launch new products or services to the Boston community. It is set to be a great event and we look forward to checking out all of the other companies.

Blogcastr swag

Lots of people have been asking us about signing-up and we are happy to announce you now can! We are currently working on all sorts of features and will be making updates on a daily basis so check back often. We would love to hear any feedback you might have or improvements you want us to make in the future. In other news, we will be demoing at Microsoft NERD on January 18th (details) and the IBM Innovation Center on February 9th (details) — stop by if you are in the area! If that isn’t exciting enough for you we also had some swag made by CustomInk.

Design Updates and Hiring a Designer

New profile

Since our last blog post we have nearly completed our redesign and are almost ready to open our beta to the public. We’ve kept most of the information contained within each page unchanged but completely overhauled the look and feel of the entire site. Our logo ended up getting a bit of a refresh as well. If you have any feedback on the redesign we would love to hear from you. Leave a comment below, use the feedback link on our site, or send an e-mail.

Hiring a designer

In addition to improving our service, this process taught us a valuable lesson: hiring a talented web-designer does not involve a job board. While job boards may work for some, we found it to be a time consuming endeavor that resulted in an inbox full of applicants but few quality candidates. It quickly became apparent that a large number of those interested hadn’t even taken the time to read the job posting. The method that ultimately worked for us and that we highly recommend is simple:

1) Find a website you think looks great

2) Find out who designed it (individual or company)

3) Check out their portfolio (in the case of a company look at the portfolios of individuals at the firm)

4) Send an e-mail

We took the additional step of speaking with someone that had worked with our designer before, but ultimately this may be unnecessary if you like the quality of their work. We found this to yield the best results and are happy with how it has worked out.
